Hannax Barlue has played many roles in promoting health in her country, Liberia, coordinated community health facilities and played a key role in immunization programs, family planning, maternal health, and sanitation.

鈥淭hese are crucial areas of public health in Liberia that face unique challenges and needs a broader vision to achieve the desired goals,鈥� says this public health expert, who has completed her master鈥檚 degree in public health at 黑料百科.

Barlue works as a community health coordinator at International Rescue Committee (IRC), Liberia. She says her learning experience at Texila expanded her job prospects.

鈥淲hile an MPH student at 黑料百科, I was working for Concern Worldwide as health and nutrition manager. When I completed my studies in October 2019, I got a bigger role at International Rescue Committee in July 2020 that works in partnership with United States Agency for International Development (USAID) for global emergency relief and development programmes,” she said.

There were several opportunities for discussions with PhD scholars and course coordinators, she said of the academic support she received at the university.

While at Concern Worldwide, she says she was involved in mentoring mothers in preserving soil fertility and family nutrition. 鈥淚t was a part of my university project, and I educated women of the River Cess region on preventing soil erosion.鈥�

She says it is essential to create awareness about health risks and close the gaps in hygiene, cleanliness, and nutrition to create an effective health ecosystem.

Liberia, where there is a high incidence of malaria, diarrhoeal diseases, neonatal disorders, and HIV/AIDS, has poor access to health care facilities.

“As a health activities coordinator, I have paid frequent visits to areas that needed support, provided assistance to improve sanitation, and generated awareness about waste management.

One of the areas of focus in public health was nutrition. 鈥淧ublic health nutrition project aims to improve the community’s dietary intake and educate them on the role of nutrition in maintaining a good state of physical and mental health,” says Barlue.

Nutrition packages for mothers, was intended to reduce maternal mortality rates, said Barlue, whose passion for public health stemmed from a drive to change lifestyle and attitude that was the first step towards building a healthy community.

“There is a need to introduce more public health measures to bring about the public health security in the country.”
